The Glasgow to Isle of Skye route
Glasgow to Skye is a full cross-country journey and one of the best long drives in Scotland. The A82 takes you north-west from Glasgow through Dumbarton and along the shore of Loch Lomond. The loch is at its widest here and the views across to the Arrochar Alps are impressive even in dull weather. Past Tarbet the road narrows and winds through the birch woods above the loch before opening out at Crianlarich.
From Crianlarich the road continues through Tyndrum, Bridge of Orchy, and onto Rannoch Moor. The descent through Glencoe is the highlight of this section. After Glencoe village the road follows the coast to Fort William. North of Fort William you have a choice: continue on the A82 through the Great Glen to Invergarry, then west on the A87 through Glen Shiel to Kyle of Lochalsh, or take the A830 Road to the Isles to Mallaig and the ferry to Armadale on Skye's Sleat peninsula.
The Kyle of Lochalsh route via the Skye Bridge is more common for transfers as it does not depend on ferry timetables. The Road to the Isles via Mallaig is worth considering if you are staying in southern Skye and want to pass the Glenfinnan Viaduct on the way.
Suggested stops along the way
Tarbet on Loch Lomond for an early comfort stop. The Green Welly Stop at Tyndrum for coffee, about 90 minutes in. Eilean Donan Castle, 10 minutes before the Skye Bridge, for the classic photo opportunity.

Local tips from our drivers
Depart Glasgow before 9am to arrive on Skye in the afternoon with daylight to spare. The A82 Loch Lomond road gets very busy on summer weekends; Saturday mornings are the worst. Fuel up at Fort William as there is nothing on the A87 until Kyle. The Mallaig ferry (CalMac) must be pre-booked in summer and does not run in the evening. If you are heading to northern Skye (Portree, Staffin), the Kyle of Lochalsh route is shorter.

Frequently asked questions
- Is this the same route as the Edinburgh to Skye transfer?
- Partly. Both routes converge at Fort William, but from Glasgow you approach via Loch Lomond and the A82, which is a different landscape. The Glasgow route is slightly shorter in total distance but similar in drive time.
- Can we see the Glenfinnan Viaduct on the way?
- Yes, if we take the Road to the Isles via the A830. The viaduct is about 30 minutes west of Fort William. We can stop at the viewpoint car park for photos. If the Jacobite steam train is running, we can time the stop to watch it cross the viaduct (check timetable in advance).
- What about the Mallaig ferry to Skye?
- The CalMac ferry from Mallaig to Armadale runs several times daily in summer but must be booked ahead, especially for vehicles. It is a good option if you are staying in southern Skye (Sleat, Armadale, Isleornsay). For Portree or northern Skye, the Skye Bridge is faster.
- How much luggage can you carry?
- Our Mercedes E-Class takes 2 large cases and hand luggage comfortably. The V-Class handles 6 to 8 cases with ease. If you have golf bags, ski equipment, or oversized items, let us know when booking and we will confirm the right vehicle.
