The Glasgow to Inverness route
There are two distinct routes from Glasgow to Inverness, and which we recommend depends on whether you want speed or scenery. The faster route takes the M80 north-east from Glasgow to Stirling, then the A9 through Perth and up the Highland main line to Inverness, the same road Edinburgh traffic uses. This takes about 3 hours and is mostly dual carriageway or recently upgraded.
The scenic route follows the A82 north-west from Glasgow along the western shore of Loch Lomond, through Crianlarich and Tyndrum, across Rannoch Moor and through Glencoe. From Fort William it continues along the Great Glen, passing Loch Lochy, Fort Augustus, and the length of Loch Ness before reaching Inverness. This route takes closer to 3 hours 45 minutes but passes through some of the finest driving country in Scotland.
We are happy to take either route. Many guests go one way out and the other on the return, which gives the best of both. The A82 scenic route is better in daylight; the A9 route is perfectly fine in the dark.
Suggested stops along the way
On the A82: Loch Lomond viewpoint at Tarbet, the Green Welly Stop at Tyndrum, Fort Augustus at the foot of Loch Ness. On the A9: House of Bruar, Pitlochry, or Aviemore. We will suggest the best options for your route.

Local tips from our drivers
The A82 along Loch Lomond is narrow and twisting between Tarbet and Crianlarich, and can be slow behind lorries. Overtaking opportunities are limited. If you are departing Glasgow on a Friday afternoon, the M80 route is faster as the A82 Loch Lomond road carries heavy weekend traffic. The A82 through the Great Glen has good stretches of dual carriageway between Fort William and Inverness.

Frequently asked questions
- Which route is faster: A82 or A9?
- The A9 via Perth is typically 30 to 45 minutes faster. The A82 via Loch Lomond and Glencoe is more scenic but slower due to single-carriageway sections and holiday traffic in summer. We recommend the A9 for tight schedules and the A82 when you have time to enjoy the drive.
- Can we go via Loch Ness?
- Yes. The A82 scenic route runs the entire length of Loch Ness between Fort Augustus and Inverness. If you take the A9 route outbound, we can return via the Great Glen so you see Loch Ness on the way back.
- Can you collect from Glasgow Airport?
- Yes. Glasgow Airport is about 15 minutes from the start of either route. We meet you in arrivals with a name board and track your flight for delays. Glasgow Prestwick Airport is further south and adds about 40 minutes.
- Is this route suitable for a one-way hire?
- Absolutely. Most of our Glasgow to Inverness transfers are one-way. We quote a fixed price for the journey. If you need a return on a different date, we can quote both legs together.
