Itinerary Guide

5 Day Scotland Itinerary

Edinburgh, Glencoe, Isle of Skye, Loch Ness, Culloden and Speyside. The route that adds Scotland's most dramatic island to the Highland essentials.

Five days is where a Scotland trip starts to feel complete. You get Edinburgh, the Highlands, and – critically – the Isle of Skye, which most visitors consider the highlight of their trip. This route covers the capital, Glencoe, a full day on Skye, Loch Ness, Culloden Battlefield, and Speyside whisky country. Every day has a different character. No backtracking.

With a private touring chauffeur, the single-track roads on Skye, the A82 through Glencoe, and the mountain passes become part of the experience rather than a source of stress. Your chauffeur knows where to stop, when to avoid the crowds, and how to read the weather – which on Skye can change your plans three times before lunch.

Day 1 — Edinburgh

Arrive in Edinburgh. If you have a full day, begin with Edinburgh Castle – Crown Jewels, St Margaret’s Chapel, and views across the city. Walk the Royal Mile to Holyroodhouse. In the afternoon, climb Arthur’s Seat for panoramic views or explore the Georgian New Town and Dean Village. Edinburgh has a strong dining scene – we recommend based on your preferences. Overnight Edinburgh.

Day 2 — Stirling, Glencoe, Glenfinnan & Road to the Isles

We collect you early and drive to Stirling Castle (45 minutes). The Great Hall and Renaissance apartments are worth an hour. From Stirling, the route heads through the Trossachs and along Loch Lomond to Glencoe (2 hours) – the Three Sisters, the Aonach Eagach ridge, and the massacre memorial. We take proper time here for photos and a short walk.

We continue through Fort William to Glenfinnan (30 minutes) – the Hogwarts Express viaduct and the Glenfinnan Monument overlooking Loch Shiel. Then west along the A830 Road to the Isles, one of Scotland’s finest drives, through Lochailort and Arisaig with views to the Small Isles. Overnight in the Mallaig, Arisaig, or Fort William area.

Day 3 — Isle of Skye

Morning: cross to Skye via the Skye Bridge (from Kyle of Lochalsh) or ferry from Mallaig to Armadale. En route, stop at Eilean Donan Castle – the most photographed castle in Scotland, sitting where three lochs meet. Eilean Donan does not take advance bookings; tickets are bought at the visitor centre when we arrive. Coach parties are heaviest from late morning through mid-afternoon, so we time the stop outside that window.

On Skye, the Trotternish Peninsula is the priority: the Old Man of Storr, Kilt Rock and Mealt Falls, the Quiraing, and Staffin Bay. These are extraordinary landscapes – volcanic, ancient, and unlike anything else in Scotland. The Trotternish loop from Portree takes a full morning with photo stops.

Afternoon options: Fairy Pools at Glen Brittle (a 45-minute walk into the Cuillin foothills with crystal-clear pools), Dunvegan Castle (the oldest continuously inhabited castle in Scotland), or time in Portree – Skye’s colourful harbour town with good restaurants and the famous pastel-painted waterfront. The pace on Skye should feel unhurried – the light changes constantly and you’ll want to stop often. Overnight on Skye.

Day 4 — Skye to Loch Ness & Culloden

Morning: depart Skye and drive east via the A87. The route passes through Glen Shiel (one of Scotland’s finest Highland valleys) and alongside Loch Cluanie and Loch Ness. Total driving: about 2 hours from Portree to Drumnadrochit, but the scenery is outstanding.

At Loch Ness, stop at Urquhart Castle – atmospheric ruins above the loch with views across 230 metres of dark water. A Loch Ness boat cruise is recommended on a calm day. After lunch, drive to Culloden Battlefield (30 minutes) where the 1746 Jacobite rising ended. The NTS visitor centre is outstanding. Nearby: Clava Cairns, a 4,000-year-old stone circle that inspired the standing stones in Outlander. Overnight Inverness.

Day 5 — Speyside, Cairngorms & Return to Edinburgh

Morning: drive into Speyside (1 hour from Inverness). Visit one or two distilleries: The Macallan (book ahead for the architecture), Glenfiddich, or smaller producers like Aberlour or Ballindalloch. A proper tour takes 60–90 minutes including tasting.

From Speyside, head south through the Cairngorms National Park – Britain’s largest, with ancient pine forest, mountain panoramas, and red squirrels. Optional stops: Aviemore, the Cairngorm funicular viewpoint, or Rothiemurchus forest. Continue through Pitlochry and Dunkeld to Edinburgh (total Speyside to Edinburgh: approximately 3 hours 30 minutes with stops). Drop-off at your hotel, Edinburgh Airport, or Waverley station.

Why 5 days works

Five days is the shortest length that comfortably includes the Isle of Skye alongside Edinburgh and the Highland essentials. The overnight positions (Edinburgh, west coast, Skye, Inverness) are well-spaced and create a logical loop. Each day builds on the last: city, mountain, island, loch, then whisky country. The pacing means Skye gets a full day rather than a drive-through.

Extend your trip

  • Add a second day on Skye – two nights allows the Fairy Pools, Dunvegan, the Talisker distillery, and the Coral Beach at Claigan. See our 7-day itinerary.
  • Add the NC500 – extend to 7–10 days and loop Scotland’s famous coastal route from Inverness. See our NC500 private tours.
  • Add Orkney – a day trip from Inverness or an overnight ferry from Scrabster for Skara Brae, the Ring of Brodgar, and St Magnus Cathedral.
  • Add Outlander locations – weave in Doune Castle, Midhope, and Culross on Day 2. See our Outlander tours.

Booking your 5-day Scotland tour

Your tour includes a touring chauffeur, a Mercedes V-Class, fuel and parking for all five days. Driver overnight accommodation is quoted separately at £150 + VAT per night where the driver cannot return to base. Guest accommodation, meals, and attraction entry are separate, but we advise on all of these and can help with booking, particularly important on Skye where hotels fill early in summer.

Frequently asked questions

Is 5 days enough to include the Isle of Skye?

Yes. Five days is the minimum we recommend for an itinerary that includes both the Highlands and the Isle of Skye. The route below gives you a full day on Skye with time for the Trotternish Peninsula, Portree, and the Fairy Pools without rushing. It also covers Edinburgh, Glencoe, Loch Ness, and Speyside.

Can a 5-day tour start from Glasgow?

Yes. Glasgow works well as a start or finish point. Day 1 would head north via Loch Lomond and the Trossachs, joining the same route from Day 2. We can also end the tour in Glasgow rather than Edinburgh if that suits your flights.

How much does a 5-day private tour of Scotland cost?

Multi-day private touring starts from £675 + VAT per day in an executive saloon and £700 + VAT per day in a Mercedes V-Class. A 5-day tour starts from £3,375 + VAT (£4,050 inc. VAT) in the saloon, or £3,500 + VAT (£4,200 inc. VAT) in the V-Class. This covers the vehicle, touring chauffeur, fuel, parking, and local expertise for all five days. Accommodation, meals, and attraction entry for guests are separate. Driver overnight accommodation is quoted separately at £150 + VAT per night where the driver cannot return to base.

What is the best time of year for a 5-day Scotland tour?

Late May to early September gives the best weather and longest daylight for Skye. The island is at its finest from June to August, with up to 18 hours of daylight. September brings quieter roads and autumn colour. Spring and winter are possible but Skye roads can be challenging in poor weather.

How long does it take to drive to Skye from the mainland?

From Fort William, the A87 via Eilean Donan Castle to the Skye Bridge takes about 2 hours. From Inverness via the A87, it is roughly 2 hours 15 minutes. We use scenic routes and build in stops, so the driving never feels like a transfer.

Can you customise the route?

Completely. This is a sample route showing pacing and geography. Swap Speyside for the NC500, add Outlander filming locations, include golf at Royal Dornoch, or spend two nights on Skye. We design around your interests.

What about accommodation on Skye?

Skye accommodation books early in summer. The Three Chimneys, Kinloch Lodge, and Skeabost House are excellent options. Portree has strong mid-range hotels and B&Bs. We advise on availability and can help with booking well in advance.
