This is our patch. Inverness sits under the flight paths to Orkney, the Outer Hebrides and the west. The heliport at Dalcross is fifteen minutes from town. A helicopter is not a scenic extra on a Highland tour. It is how you put a morning on an island that would otherwise take a ferry day to reach, then still be home for dinner.
Venture Highland does not operate aircraft. We arrange a licensed operator, then we run the part that actually makes the day work: collection from your hotel, the vehicle waiting at the landing, a touring chauffeur on the ground, boat connections where a rotor disc does not belong, and a written road or ferry plan if the weather says no.
Private helicopter tours from Inverness
Most “helicopter tours Scotland” pages sell a scenic circuit from Edinburgh or Perthshire: castles from the air, a whisky glen, back for lunch. That is a flyover. From Inverness the useful product is different. Dalcross is fifteen minutes from town. Orkney, Harris and Mull sit across water that wastes a touring day by ferry. The helicopter gets you onto the island. We meet you with a Mercedes and a touring chauffeur so the hours on the ground are a real day, not a hover.

These are typical times from Inverness, not a timetable. The aircraft still has to fly, and ferries still have to sail.

How a day is built
Air
Licensed helicopter, usually lifting from Dalcross. Soft bags only. Routing and landing sites agreed before the morning.
Ground
Mercedes on the island. Touring chauffeur with you for the sites, lunch and the last miles a helicopter should not fly.
Fallback
Every day has a road or ferry alternative issued before travel. If the aircraft stays on the ground, the car still goes.
Island days we run from Inverness
One island, done properly. Not three islands before lunch. The aircraft earns its keep where the ferry wastes the day. Skye from Inverness is usually still a road day on the A87 unless you are combining it with something the car cannot reach.
Orkney
Inverness to Kirkwall is about 50 to 60 minutes in the air. By road and NorthLink ferry it is most of a day before you start.

Luggage, landings and weather
A light helicopter is not a luggage hold. One soft bag each in the aircraft. Suitcases go in the Mercedes, which either waits or repositions so the cases are in the room or at the landing before you are. We have run this on multi-day Highland itineraries; it is not a theory.
Landing sites are agreed in advance. Estate and crofting ground needs the owner, and in the stalking season the head stalker, not a hopeful hover. Historic and National Trust sites are approached by car or boat. Staffa is a boat from Mull. Harris beaches are a drive from an agreed strip.
Weather in the Minch and over Orkney is not a footnote. We set a cut-off time with the operator and we issue the fallback in writing. That is the difference between a helicopter day and a cancelled morning.
What it costs
The aircraft is quoted by the operator for flying hours, positioning, waiting and landing fees. Our private vehicle and touring chauffeur are quoted separately. Third-party charter, boats and tickets that we arrange carry a 10% + VAT concierge booking fee on those costs. We do not publish a from-price here because the routing changes the figure. Ask with dates and passenger count.

Can you do a day trip to Orkney from Inverness?
By road and ferry, no: Scrabster and NorthLink take most of the day before you start. By helicopter from Dalcross it is about 50 to 60 minutes to Kirkwall, five or six hours on the ground, and home the same evening. That is the Orkney helicopter day.
How long is Inverness to Harris or Stornoway by helicopter?
About 45 to 50 minutes to Stornoway. The Ullapool ferry and the drive to it otherwise eat a full touring day. On the ground we pick Harris or Lewis, not both.
Do you operate the helicopter?
No. We arrange the aircraft through a licensed Scottish operator, usually lifting from the Inverness heliport at Dalcross. What is included besides the flight?

Can we land on Staffa or on a Harris beach?
No. Staffa is National Trust for Scotland and is reached by boat from Mull. Harris beaches and crofting machair are not private helipads. We land at an agreed strip or town and drive the last stretch.
Is Skye better by helicopter or by road from Inverness?
By road. Inverness to Portree is about two and a half hours on the A87. A helicopter only earns its keep on Skye if you are combining a landing the car cannot reach. For Orkney, Harris and Mull the water is the problem, not the miles.
What happens if the weather stops the flight?
Every day we sell has a written road or ferry fallback before you travel. If the aircraft cannot lift, the Mercedes still runs. We do not invent the alternative on the helipad.
How much does a private helicopter tour in Scotland cost?
