The Edinburgh to Isle of Skye route
This is one of the longer transfers we run, and one of the most rewarding drives in Scotland. From Edinburgh, we take the M9 to Stirling, then the A84 through Callander and along Loch Lubnaig, one of the quieter and prettier stretches of road in the southern Highlands. At Crianlarich the route joins the A82, climbing over the moor past Tyndrum and Bridge of Orchy before dropping onto Rannoch Moor, a vast expanse of peat bog and lochans that feels genuinely remote.
From Rannoch Moor the road descends through Glencoe, past the Buachaille Etive Mor and along the glen floor to Glencoe village, then continues to Fort William. North of Fort William we pick up the A82 along the shore of Loch Lochy and Loch Oich through the Great Glen, turning west at Invergarry onto the A87. This road runs through Glen Garry, past Loch Cluanie and through Glen Shiel, which is flanked by the Five Sisters of Kintail, some of the finest ridge scenery in Scotland.
The A87 brings you to Kyle of Lochalsh and across the Skye Bridge. Most Skye accommodation is in Portree (another 30 minutes north) or the Sleat peninsula (south). The whole drive takes five to six hours with stops, but it never drags. Every section has something worth seeing.
Suggested stops along the way
The Green Welly Stop at Tyndrum for a coffee and leg-stretch, roughly two hours in. Glencoe viewpoint at the Three Sisters for photos (there is a layby on the left heading west). Eilean Donan Castle, just before Kyle of Lochalsh, for a 15-minute stop and photos of the most photographed castle in Scotland.

Local tips from our drivers
This transfer works best as a morning departure from Edinburgh to arrive on Skye in the afternoon. The A87 through Glen Shiel has no fuel stops for 50 miles, so we always fuel up at Fort William. Summer evenings give extraordinary light on the Five Sisters. In winter, shorter days mean you may arrive in the dark if departing after midday. The Skye Bridge is toll-free.

Frequently asked questions
- Is 5 to 6 hours too long to sit in a car?
- Not at all. We break the drive with two or three stops, and the scenery changes constantly. Most guests say the transfer felt like a tour. The drive passes through Glencoe, the Great Glen, and Glen Shiel, so there is always something to look at.
- Do you take the Skye Bridge or the ferry?
- We normally cross via the Skye Bridge at Kyle of Lochalsh, which is toll-free. The Mallaig to Armadale ferry is an alternative if you are heading to southern Skye, but it requires a booking in summer and adds time. We are happy to arrange either.
- Can we turn this transfer into a touring day?
- Yes. Many guests add time at Glencoe, the Glenfinnan Viaduct, or Eilean Donan Castle. We can build a flexible itinerary that gets you to Skye by late afternoon with several stops along the way. Just let us know your priorities.
- Where on Skye will you drop us?
- Anywhere on the island. Portree, Sligachan, Dunvegan, the Sleat peninsula hotels, or any self-catering property. Just confirm the address when you book and we will plan the route accordingly.
