The Aviemore to Isle of Skye route
From Aviemore, the A9 takes you north through Carrbridge and over the Slochd summit to Inverness, about 40 minutes. At Inverness you pick up the A82 heading south-west along the Caledonian Canal and the western shore of Loch Ness. The road follows the loch for about 25 miles, passing Drumnadrochit (if you want a Loch Ness stop) and continuing to Invermoriston.
At Invermoriston, or further south at Invergarry, the route turns west onto the A87. This road runs through Glen Moriston and along Loch Cluanie, a long reservoir surrounded by Munros. The road then drops through Glen Shiel, one of the most dramatic glens in the Highlands, with the Five Sisters of Kintail rising steeply on the north side. The narrow road through Glen Shiel has passing places in some sections and is particularly striking in morning light.
Eilean Donan Castle appears at the junction of three lochs just before Kyle of Lochalsh. From Kyle, the Skye Bridge takes you onto the island. Portree is another 30 minutes north via the A87. The whole transfer takes about 3 hours 30 minutes with no stops, or 4 hours with a break at Eilean Donan or Drumnadrochit.
Suggested stops along the way
Drumnadrochit on Loch Ness for a quick stop and a view of Urquhart Castle from the roadside. Loch Cluanie viewpoint, a layby at the western end of the loch with a view down the glen. Eilean Donan Castle, just before Kyle, for the definitive Highland castle photo.

Local tips from our drivers
This transfer works well as a morning departure from Aviemore. The A87 through Glen Shiel has no fuel between Invermoriston and Kyle of Lochalsh, so we fuel at Inverness. Summer evenings give long light on the Five Sisters. In winter, Glen Shiel can have snow and ice on the higher sections; the road is gritted but can be slow. The Skye Bridge is toll-free. If you are heading to Dunvegan or the Waternish peninsula, add 30 minutes beyond Portree.

Frequently asked questions
- Is this transfer scenic?
- Very. You pass along Loch Ness, through Glen Shiel with the Five Sisters of Kintail, and past Eilean Donan Castle. It is one of the most consistently scenic drives we offer, with something worth seeing for almost the entire route.
- Can we stop at Loch Ness?
- Yes. The road runs along the western shore of Loch Ness between Inverness and Invermoriston. The best viewpoint is near Urquhart Castle at Drumnadrochit. A 15-minute stop there does not add significantly to the journey.
- How does this compare to driving from Edinburgh to Skye?
- Aviemore to Skye is about 2 hours shorter than Edinburgh to Skye. The route via Loch Ness and Glen Shiel is different from the Edinburgh route via Glencoe and Fort William. If you are spending time in the Cairngorms before heading to Skye, this is the natural onward transfer.
- Where on Skye will you drop us?
- Anywhere on the island. Portree, Dunvegan, Sligachan, Carbost, Sleat peninsula, or any self-catering property. Give us the address when booking and we will confirm the arrival time.
