The Glasgow to Glencoe route

Glasgow to Glencoe is a relatively short transfer that packs in a lot of scenery. The A82 leaves Glasgow and follows Loch Lomond's western shore, with the Arrochar Alps rising across the water. This section of road is pleasant but narrow in places, with several blind bends between Tarbet and Ardlui.

Past Crianlarich and Tyndrum, the road enters wilder territory. The climb to Bridge of Orchy takes you through open glen country with scattered Scots pine, and then onto Rannoch Moor. This is the big moment of the drive: a vast, treeless plateau where the road is the only sign of human activity for miles. On a stormy day the Moor is extraordinary.

The descent from the Moor into Glencoe is unmistakable. The Buachaille Etive Mor stands at the entrance to the glen, and the road drops between the ridges with waterfalls on both sides after rain. Glencoe village is a small settlement at the western end of the glen, with Ballachulish just beyond. Most guests staying in the area are within a five-minute drive of each other.

Suggested stops along the way

Tarbet on Loch Lomond for an early break if needed. The Tyndrum Green Welly Stop for coffee, about 75 minutes in. The layby at Buachaille Etive Mor for the classic mountain view before dropping into the glen.
