The Glasgow to Fort William route
This is one of the classic A82 drives. From Glasgow, the road passes through Dumbarton and picks up the western shore of Loch Lomond, Scotland's largest loch by surface area. The road hugs the lochside past Luss and Tarbet, where the water narrows and the hills close in. Past Ardlui at the head of the loch, the road climbs to Crianlarich.
From Crianlarich the A82 continues to Tyndrum, the last village with shops and fuel before the wilder country begins. Bridge of Orchy follows, then the long crossing of Rannoch Moor, open and flat with views of distant mountains in every direction. The road drops into Glencoe, passing the Buachaille Etive Mor and threading through the glen to Glencoe village and Ballachulish.
The final stretch from Ballachulish to Fort William follows the shore of Loch Linnhe, with Ben Nevis to the right. On clear days the Ben dominates the skyline. Fort William sits at the junction of the Great Glen and the Road to the Isles, making it a natural hub for onward travel to Skye, Mallaig, or the far north.

Local tips from our drivers
The A82 between Tarbet and Crianlarich has tight bends and limited overtaking; allow for slower traffic ahead. Saturday mornings in summer are the busiest time on the Loch Lomond section. There is a petrol station at Tyndrum (Shell) and Fort William, but nothing in between. If you need to arrive in Fort William for a specific activity (Jacobite train, Nevis Range gondola, boat trip), give us the time and we will work backwards to confirm pickup.

Frequently asked questions
- Is the A82 a good road?
- The A82 is a well-maintained trunk road but is mostly single carriageway between Glasgow and Fort William. Some sections are narrow with passing places. Our drivers know every bend and overtaking opportunity. It is a safe and scenic road, just not fast.
- Can we stop at Loch Lomond?
- Yes. The road runs alongside the loch for about 30 minutes. Luss is the most popular village stop. For a quieter option, the layby at Firkin Point has a lovely view without the crowds. We can stop wherever suits you.
- What is there to do in Fort William?
- Fort William is the outdoor capital of the UK. Ben Nevis, Nevis Range (skiing in winter, gondola and mountain biking in summer), the Jacobite steam train, and the Great Glen Way all start here. The town itself is functional rather than pretty, but the surroundings are superb.
- Can I book a return transfer for a different day?
- Yes. We offer return transfers on any date. Many guests book a one-way transfer to Fort William and a return a few days later, sometimes via a different route for variety. We quote both legs and can include stops or detours on either.
