The Edinburgh to Glencoe route

The route from Edinburgh to Glencoe takes you through the heart of the southern Highlands. We leave Edinburgh on the M9 to Stirling, then follow the A84 north through Callander, past Loch Lubnaig and through Strathyre. This stretch is particularly good in autumn when the birch and oak are turning. At Crianlarich we join the A82 heading north through Tyndrum and Bridge of Orchy.

After Bridge of Orchy the road climbs onto Rannoch Moor. This is one of the last true wilderness areas in Britain: 50 square miles of open bog, rough grass, and scattered lochans with barely a building in sight. The Moor sits at around 300m and is exposed to weather from every direction. It is dramatic in any conditions, but in low cloud or rain it has a real atmosphere that photographs well.

The descent from Rannoch Moor brings you face-to-face with the Buachaille Etive Mor, one of the most recognisable mountains in Scotland, before the road drops into Glencoe proper. Most accommodation in the area is in Glencoe village, Ballachulish, or along the single-track road into the glen itself. We drop you right at your door.

Suggested stops along the way

Kilmahog Woollen Mill just outside Callander for a quick break and to see the Highland cows. The viewpoint above Loch Tulla near Bridge of Orchy for one of the best views of Rannoch Moor. The King's House Hotel at the foot of Buachaille Etive Mor for coffee or a dram before the final stretch into Glencoe.

Local tips from our drivers

Glencoe accommodation books out months ahead in summer and during the ski season (January to March). The car park at the Three Sisters viewpoint fills by mid-morning in peak season, but your driver will know the quieter laybys. The Glencoe Ski Centre runs from December to April depending on snow. Mobile signal is patchy through the glen. If your accommodation is in the glen itself (not the village), confirm the access road with your host as some are single-track with passing places.
