The Edinburgh to Fort William route
From Edinburgh we head west on the M9 to Stirling, then take the A84 through Callander and Strathyre, following Loch Lubnaig north. At Crianlarich we join the A82, which is the main artery into the western Highlands. The road climbs through Tyndrum (the last fuel stop before Fort William if you are not stopping at the Green Welly), past Bridge of Orchy, and onto Rannoch Moor, a striking plateau of bog and open water that sits at around 300m.
The descent from Rannoch Moor into Glencoe is one of the defining stretches of road in Scotland. The Buachaille Etive Mor appears ahead, then the road threads through the glen with steep ridges on both sides. After Glencoe village, the A82 follows the shore of Loch Linnhe into Fort William, with Ben Nevis visible to the east on clear days. The final approach into town passes the aluminium smelter and the roundabout at the north end of the high street.
An alternative route runs via the M80 and A82 through Loch Lomond-side from Dumbarton, joining the same road at Crianlarich. This is slightly longer in distance but can be quicker if Edinburgh traffic is heavy on the M9.
Suggested stops along the way
The Green Welly Stop at Tyndrum for coffee and a break, about halfway. The Glencoe viewpoint layby opposite the Three Sisters for a photo stop. Ballachulish for a view back across Loch Leven to the Pap of Glencoe.

Local tips from our drivers
The A82 between Tyndrum and Fort William is single carriageway and can be slow behind lorries and caravans in summer. Your driver will know the safe overtaking points. If you are catching the Jacobite steam train, we recommend arriving in Fort William by 9am to allow time at the station. The road through Glencoe has no mobile signal in places. Fuel is available at Tyndrum and Fort William but not in between.

Frequently asked questions
- Which route is better: via Stirling or Loch Lomond?
- For most Edinburgh pickups, the route via Stirling and the A84 is faster and more scenic through the central Highlands. The Loch Lomond route via the M80 and A82 from Dumbarton is a good alternative if you are coming from south Edinburgh or if there is congestion on the M9.
- Can you get us to Fort William in time for the Jacobite steam train?
- Yes. The Jacobite departs Fort William at 10:15 (summer season). We recommend a 6:30am pickup from central Edinburgh to arrive comfortably by 9:30am. We can also collect you from Mallaig after the return journey.
- Is there anything to see in Fort William itself?
- Fort William is more of a gateway than a destination. The main draw is Ben Nevis, the Nevis Range gondola, and the Great Glen. The town centre has decent restaurants and a good outdoor shop. Most guests use Fort William as a base for Glencoe, the Jacobite, or onward travel to Skye.
- Can we stop at Glencoe on the way?
- Yes, and we recommend it. A 15 to 20-minute stop at the Three Sisters viewpoint or the Glencoe Visitor Centre adds very little to the journey time and is worth the detour. We can also take the single-track road into the Lost Valley car park if you want a short walk.
