The Edinburgh to Inverness route
The most direct route follows the M90 across the Queensferry Crossing, through Fife and into Perth. From Perth the A9 heads north through Highland Perthshire, passing Pitlochry, Blair Atholl, and the Drumochter Pass at 460m, the highest point on the A9. The road then drops through Cairngorms territory past Dalwhinnie, Kingussie, and Aviemore before crossing the Slochd summit and descending into Inverness.
The A9 is now dualled in several sections between Perth and Inverness, with average speed cameras running from Dunblane all the way through. On a clear day the Cairngorms ridge is visible for much of the final hour, and in winter the tops are snow-covered from November well into April. The landscape changes distinctly as you move north: lowland farmland gives way to birch woodland, then open moorland, then the Spey valley before Inverness.
For guests who want a slightly different return route, we can divert through the Cairngorms National Park via the B9152 and A95, adding about 20 minutes but passing through Boat of Garten and Grantown-on-Spey, both worth seeing if time allows.
Suggested stops along the way
House of Bruar, just north of Blair Atholl, for a comfort break, food hall, and short waterfall walk. Pitlochry town centre for a leg-stretch and a look at the dam and fish ladder. Cairngorm Coffee in Aviemore for a flat white and a view of the Cairngorms if timing works.

Local tips from our drivers
The A9 average speed cameras run from Dunblane to Inverness, so your driver will hold a steady pace throughout. Allow an extra 20 minutes in July and August when caravans and motorhomes slow the single-carriageway sections. In winter, the Drumochter Pass can close temporarily in heavy snow; Traffic Scotland updates are checked before every departure. Friday afternoons see heavier traffic between Perth and Pitlochry as weekenders head north.

Frequently asked questions
- How long does the Edinburgh to Inverness transfer actually take?
- Around 3 hours in normal conditions. Rush-hour traffic leaving Edinburgh can add 15 to 20 minutes, and summer caravans on the A9 single-carriageway sections can slow things further. We always allow a buffer when connecting with flights or trains.
- Can we stop along the way?
- Absolutely. Most guests stop once at House of Bruar or Pitlochry. We build this into the timing. If you want a longer stop or a second stop, just let us know and we will adjust the schedule.
- Is the A9 safe to drive in winter?
- The A9 is a primary trunk road and is gritted and maintained throughout winter. Our drivers are experienced in Highland conditions and carry winter tyres from November. The Drumochter Pass occasionally closes in severe snow, but this is rare and we monitor conditions in advance.
- Can you collect us from Edinburgh Airport instead of the city centre?
- Yes. We collect from Edinburgh Airport, any Edinburgh hotel, or any city-centre address. Airport pickups include meet and greet in the arrivals hall and flight tracking so we adjust for delays.
