The Edinburgh to Aviemore route
The route to Aviemore follows the same corridor as the Edinburgh to Inverness transfer, but you peel off earlier. The M90 crosses the Queensferry Crossing (opened 2017, replacing the old Forth Road Bridge for most traffic) and runs through Fife to Perth. From Perth the A9 heads north into Highland Perthshire.
The A9 between Perth and Aviemore is one of Scotland's key trunk roads and has been partially dualled in recent years. You pass through Pitlochry, where the road runs above the town with views down to the River Tummel, then Blair Atholl, home to the only legal private army in Europe. The Drumochter Pass follows, the highest point on the A9 at 460m, before the descent through Dalwhinnie (home to one of Scotland's highest distilleries) and into the Cairngorms.
Aviemore sits in the Spey valley at the foot of the Cairngorm range. The town is the main service centre for the National Park and has good restaurants, outdoor shops, and the Strathspey Steam Railway. From Aviemore you can reach the Cairngorm Mountain ski area in 20 minutes.
Suggested stops along the way
Pitlochry for a quick stop at the dam and fish ladder, or a coffee in the town centre. House of Bruar, 5 minutes north of Blair Atholl, for food, good toilets, and a stretch of the legs. Dalwhinnie Distillery if you want a short visit (tours run daily, about 45 minutes).

Local tips from our drivers
The A9 average speed cameras are in force for the entire stretch, so the drive is steady and predictable. In ski season (December to April), Aviemore gets busy at weekends and the Cairngorm mountain road can have restrictions. If you are heading to a specific resort or lodge (Macdonald Aviemore, the Hilton, or a self-catering in Boat of Garten or Carrbridge), let us know and we will drop you at the door. The Aviemore turnoff from the A9 is well signed.

Frequently asked questions
- How long does Edinburgh to Aviemore take?
- Around 2 hours 30 minutes in normal traffic. The A9 is mostly dual carriageway or newly upgraded, so the drive is smooth. Departing Edinburgh before 8am or after 10am avoids the worst of the Queensferry Crossing commuter traffic.
- Can you collect us from Edinburgh Airport?
- Yes. Edinburgh Airport is about 15 minutes from the M90, so it adds very little to the journey. We meet you in the arrivals hall with a name board and handle your luggage.
- Is Aviemore a good base for the Cairngorms?
- Aviemore is the most practical base. It has the widest choice of accommodation, restaurants, and shops. Alternatives include Boat of Garten (quieter, 10 minutes east), Carrbridge (15 minutes north), or Kingussie and Newtonmore (20 minutes south). We can drop you at any of these.
- What if we want to visit a distillery on the way?
- Dalwhinnie Distillery is directly on the route and offers short tours. Edradour, near Pitlochry, is a brief detour and is one of Scotland's smallest traditional distilleries. We can build either into the transfer timing.
