The Glasgow to Skibo Castle route
Skibo Castle sits on the Dornoch Firth in Sutherland, and reaching it from Glasgow requires a near full-length run through the Highlands. The most direct route takes the M80 to Stirling, then the A9 north through Perth, the Cairngorms corridor, and Inverness, before continuing on the A9 to Tain and the Dornoch Firth. This takes about 4 hours 30 minutes and is on good roads throughout.
The scenic alternative follows the A82 from Glasgow through Loch Lomond, Glencoe, and Fort William, then the Great Glen to Inverness, before heading north. This adds around 45 minutes but takes in Loch Lomond-side, Rannoch Moor, Glencoe, and Loch Ness. It is a spectacular drive if you have the time.
North of Inverness, both routes converge on the A9 through the Black Isle and Easter Ross. You cross the Cromarty and Dornoch Firth bridges before turning off to Skibo. The estate is well signed from the main road near Clashmore, a few miles west of Dornoch.
Suggested stops along the way
On the A9 route: House of Bruar and Inverness for a break. On the A82 route: the Green Welly Stop at Tyndrum and Fort Augustus on Loch Ness. Glenmorangie Distillery at Tain is a 5-minute detour from the A9, close to Skibo.

Local tips from our drivers
For a morning arrival at Skibo, we recommend departing Glasgow by 6:00am on the A9 route. The A9 north of Inverness is quieter than the Perth section, with lighter traffic and no speed cameras. Skibo Castle has its own arrival protocol; we coordinate directly with their team. If you are combining the transfer with a round of golf at Royal Dornoch, the club is 10 minutes from Skibo and we can include the drop-off.
