The drive from Edinburgh to Skibo Castle runs the full length of the A9, Scotland's great north road. You cross the Queensferry Crossing on the M90, pass through Perth, then follow the A9 north through Highland Perthshire, the Drumochter Pass, and the Cairngorms corridor past Aviemore. At Inverness you cross the Kessock Bridge over the Beauly Firth and continue north on the A9.

North of Inverness the road hugs the coast through the Black Isle, crossing the Cromarty Firth at the Cromarty Bridge, then through Alness and Tain. The Dornoch Firth Bridge brings you into Sutherland, and from there it is a short drive to the Skibo Castle estate entrance near Clashmore. The estate gates are well signed from the main road.

This is a longer transfer, but the road is good throughout and the scenery changes constantly. The final hour north of Inverness is quieter and more open, with big views over the firths and the hills of Easter Ross. Skibo Castle members often request this transfer for the privacy and comfort it offers over the train.

Suggested stops along the way

House of Bruar for a break, around 90 minutes into the drive. Inverness for a coffee or lunch at Velocity Cafe or Rocpool, roughly three-quarters through the journey. The Glenmorangie Distillery at Tain is directly on the route if you want a short tour or tasting.
