The Glasgow to Scottish Highlands route

Glasgow sits at the southern edge of the Highlands, and there are multiple routes north depending on where you are headed. The A82 corridor runs north-west through Loch Lomond, Crianlarich, Glencoe, and Fort William, serving the western Highlands and providing access to Skye, Oban, and the west coast. The M80/A9 corridor runs north-east through Stirling and Perth, serving the eastern and central Highlands: Aviemore, the Cairngorms, Inverness, and points further north.

For destinations like Oban, the route follows the A82 to Crianlarich then the A85 west through Glen Dochart and Loch Awe-side. For Torridon, Ullapool, or the far north-west, we would typically take the A82 to Fort William and then north through the Great Glen, or the A9 to Inverness and then west. Each destination has an optimal route and we will plan it in detail once we know where you are going.

Glasgow's position means you can reach Loch Lomond in 40 minutes and be in proper Highland country within 90 minutes. It is a better starting point than Edinburgh for the western Highlands and islands.

Suggested stops along the way

Destination-dependent. For A82 routes: Luss on Loch Lomond or the Green Welly Stop at Tyndrum. For A9 routes: Pitlochry or House of Bruar. We will recommend stops once we know your final destination and preferred travel pace.

Local tips from our drivers

Glasgow is the closer city for Loch Lomond, Oban, Fort William, and Skye. Edinburgh is closer to the A9 corridor for Aviemore and Inverness. If you are unsure which city to start from, send us your destination and we will advise. Friday afternoon traffic leaving Glasgow on the A82 is heavy; departing before 3pm or after 7pm avoids the worst of it.

Frequently asked questions

Is Glasgow or Edinburgh better for reaching the Highlands?
Glasgow is better for the western Highlands (Loch Lomond, Glencoe, Fort William, Oban, Skye). Edinburgh is better for the eastern Highlands (Aviemore, Inverness, Speyside). Both work for central destinations like Pitlochry or Perthshire.
Can you collect us from Glasgow Airport?
