The Aviemore to Edinburgh route

The return journey from Aviemore to Edinburgh reverses the northbound route. The A9 heads south from Aviemore through the Spey valley, past Kingussie and Newtonmore, then climbs to the Drumochter Pass at 460m. From the summit the road descends through Blair Atholl and Pitlochry before reaching Perth. At Perth, the M90 takes you south through Fife, across the Queensferry Crossing, and into Edinburgh.

The drive is smooth and predictable, mostly on dual carriageway or recently upgraded single carriageway with average speed cameras. The Cairngorms are behind you for the first 30 minutes, and the landscape gradually shifts from Highland moorland to Perthshire farmland to the Fife coast. On a clear morning, the views south from the Drumochter Pass towards the Perthshire hills are excellent.

For guests heading to Edinburgh Airport, we leave the M90 at Junction 1A for the airport, which is about 15 minutes quicker than going into the city centre. For city-centre or Old Town drop-offs, we continue to the end of the M90 and into Edinburgh via Queensferry Road or the city bypass.

Suggested stops along the way

House of Bruar for a comfort break, about 50 minutes into the drive. Pitlochry town centre for a leg-stretch and coffee. Perth city centre if you want a longer stop, roughly 90 minutes into the journey.

If you are heading to Edinburgh Airport for an afternoon or evening flight, departing Aviemore by noon gives a comfortable margin. The A9 is busiest southbound on Sunday evenings as weekend visitors head home. The Queensferry Crossing can have speed restrictions in high winds, but closures are extremely rare. If you are heading to Waverley station for a train connection, give us your train time and we will plan the arrival accordingly.

Yes. The airport is a direct exit from the M90, so it actually saves time compared to the city centre. We drop at the departures door and help with luggage.

Is the southbound A9 as scenic as the northbound?

The same road, different perspective. Looking south from Drumochter you see the Perthshire hills rather than the Cairngorms. Many guests find the southbound drive just as enjoyable. The changing landscape keeps it interesting.

What if we want to stop at a distillery on the way?

Dalwhinnie is the most convenient, 20 minutes from Aviemore on the A9. Edradour near Pitlochry is a short detour. Blair Athol Distillery is in Pitlochry town. We can include any of these and adjust the timing.

How does Sunday traffic compare to weekdays?

Sunday afternoons and evenings see heavier southbound traffic on the A9, particularly between Aviemore and Perth. Departing before midday avoids the worst of it. Weekday traffic is lighter north of Perth.
