The Glenlivet Distillery in Ballindalloch

Scottish Distillery Guide

The Glenlivet Distillery

Speyside · Est. 1824 · Ballindalloch

The Glenlivet is one of the most important distilleries in Scotch whisky history. When George Smith took out one of the first licences under the 1823 Excise Act, he faced threats from local illicit distillers and reportedly carried pistols for protection. The whisky he produced was so good that dozens of other distilleries later tried to use the Glenlivet name, leading Smith's son to trademark it with the definite article – The Glenlivet.

History

George Smith founded The Glenlivet in 1824, encouraged by his landlord the Duke of Gordon who had championed the Excise Act. The original distillery was at Upper Drumin before moving to the current Minmore site in 1858. The Glenlivet became one of the most respected names in Scotch and is now owned by Chivas Brothers (Pernod Ricard).
