The Macallan Distillery in Craigellachie

Scottish Distillery Guide

The Macallan Distillery

Speyside · Est. 1824 · Craigellachie

The Macallan is one of the most sought-after single malts in the world, renowned for sherry-oak maturation and consistently high auction prices. The new distillery and visitor experience, opened in 2018 and designed by Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners, is a wave-shaped building set into the hillside of the Easter Elchies estate with panoramic views over Speyside.

History

Alexander Reid founded The Macallan in 1824, making it one of the first distilleries to be licensed in Scotland. The Easter Elchies House, a Jacobean manor on the estate, has been the spiritual home of the brand for two centuries. The Macallan's reputation for sherry-cask-matured whisky was cemented in the mid-20th century under Roderick Kemp's stewardship.
