Aberlour Distillery in Aberlour

Scottish Distillery Guide

Aberlour Distillery

Speyside · Est. 1879 · Aberlour

Aberlour sits on the banks of the Lour Burn in the village of the same name, right on the Speyside whisky trail. The distillery is known for double-cask maturation – combining bourbon and sherry oak – which gives its whisky exceptional depth and richness. The visitor experience is intimate and well-regarded.

History

James Fleming, a local grain merchant, founded Aberlour Distillery in 1879, choosing the site for its access to the pure water of the Lour Burn and nearby springs. The original distillery was destroyed by fire in 1898 and rebuilt by Charles Doig, Scotland's foremost distillery architect. It is now owned by Chivas Brothers (Pernod Ricard).
