Benromach is one of the smallest distilleries in Speyside, with just two stills operated by a tiny team. Owned by the legendary independent bottler Gordon & MacPhail, Benromach produces a characterful style that uses a touch of peat – unusual for Speyside – to give its whisky a distinctive edge. The distillery is in Forres, at the western gateway to Speyside.
History
The distillery was built in 1898 but closed in 1983 during the whisky industry downturn. Gordon & MacPhail, the Elgin-based independent bottler, purchased it in 1993 and spent years restoring it before production restarted in 1998. HRH The Prince of Wales (now King Charles III) officially reopened it.
