About the course

Opened in 2003, Dundonald Links was built through natural duneland on the Ayrshire coast between Irvine and Troon. Kyle Phillips — the architect behind Kingsbarns — created a modern links that sits seamlessly in the landscape, with wide fairways that funnel into narrow, well-defended greens. The course stretches past 7,100 yards from the championship tees but plays shorter from the forward positions, making it accessible without losing its teeth.

Dundonald hosted the 2017 Scottish Open and has been praised for the quality of its conditioning and the variety of its holes. The outward nine runs along the coast with views across to Arran and Ailsa Craig, while the inward nine weaves through higher dunes with more sheltered, strategic golf. The greens are fast, the bunkers deep, and the wind — as on any Ayrshire links — is always a factor.

The drive from Glasgow and Edinburgh

How does Dundonald compare to Royal Troon?

Dundonald is a modern links with wider fairways and fewer blind shots than Troon, but the strategic challenge is equally demanding. Tee times are far easier to secure than at Royal Troon, making Dundonald an excellent addition to an Ayrshire golf tour — particularly for groups who want a championship-calibre test without the booking constraints.

Can you arrange a full Ayrshire golf tour?

Yes. We regularly plan multi-day Ayrshire golf itineraries covering Dundonald, Royal Troon, Western Gailes, Turnberry and Prestwick. One driver, one vehicle, all logistics handled — including restaurant bookings and accommodation coordination if needed.
