Glenmorangie Distillery in Tain

Scottish Distillery Guide

Glenmorangie Distillery

Highland · Est. 1843 · Tain

Glenmorangie is one of the best-known Highland single malts, distinguished by Scotland's tallest stills – as tall as a giraffe at 5.14 metres. The extra height means only the lightest, most elegant vapours reach the top, producing an exceptionally smooth and complex spirit. The distillery sits on the shore of the Dornoch Firth near Tain in Easter Ross.

History

William Matheson founded the distillery in 1843 on the site of a brewery that had been operating since the 1730s. The name comes from the Gaelic for 'glen of tranquillity.' Glenmorangie pioneered the use of ex-bourbon barrels in Scotch maturation and later led the wood-finishing revolution with its Extra Matured range in the 1990s.

The whisky
