Scottish Distillery Guide

Tomatin Distillery

Highland · Est. 1897 · Tomatin

Tomatin sits in the Monadhliath Mountains south of Inverness, right beside the A9. In the 1970s it was the largest distillery in Scotland with 23 stills, though it now operates on a smaller scale with a focus on quality single malts. Owned by the Takara Shuzo Company since 1986, it was one of the first Scotch distilleries to come under Japanese ownership.

History

Founded in 1897, Tomatin grew throughout the 20th century to become Scotland's largest distillery by volume. Over-expansion led to financial difficulties, and in 1986 it was purchased by Takara Shuzo and Okura & Co. of Japan – the first Japanese acquisition of a Scottish distillery. The transition has been widely regarded as successful, with investment in quality and visitor facilities.

The whisky

Smooth and malty with apple, honey and a light Highland warmth.
