Culloden Battlefield Tour from Inverness

Private Jacobite history experience. Culloden, Clava Cairns, Fort George and Highland clan sites – with a local driver-guide who brings the history to life.

Culloden is just 15 minutes from our base in Inverness – and it is one of the most powerful and significant historical sites in Scotland. The Battle of Culloden on 16 April 1746 ended the Jacobite cause, shattered the Highland clan system, and changed Scotland forever. Standing on the battlefield, among the clan grave markers, is an experience that stays with you.

Our private Culloden tour combines the battlefield with the ancient standing stones at Clava Cairns, the imposing Fort George, and optional stops at castles and clan sites – all with a driver-guide who knows the Jacobite history intimately. Outlander fans will recognise many of these locations – see our dedicated Outlander tour from Inverness for a full Outlander itinerary.

Tour route and stops

1. Culloden Battlefield & Visitor Centre

The most significant battlefield in Scottish history. On 16 April 1746, the Jacobite army was destroyed in just 40 minutes on this open moorland east of Inverness. The NTS visitor centre offers an immersive experience including a 360-degree battle simulation. Outside, you walk among the clan grave markers – Fraser, Mackintosh, Cameron, Stewart – and see the memorial cairn. Allow at least 1.5 hours. Admission ~£15pp (visitor centre). Battlefield walk is free.

2. Clava Cairns

Just 5 minutes from Culloden, these 4,000-year-old standing stones and passage cairns are among the most atmospheric prehistoric sites in Scotland. Diana Gabaldon confirmed they inspired the Craigh na Dun stones in Outlander. Best experienced in the morning when it’s quiet. Free, open access.

3. Fort George

One of the finest 18th-century artillery fortifications in Europe, built in the aftermath of Culloden to ensure no Highland rising could succeed again. Still an active military base with an excellent museum, regimental collections, and sweeping views across the Moray Firth (watch for dolphins from the ramparts). Admission ~£12pp (Historic Scotland).

4. Beauly & Wardlaw Mausoleum (optional)

The quiet Highland town of Beauly with its 13th-century priory ruins and the Wardlaw Mausoleum – burial place of Fraser clan chiefs. Deeply connected to the real Fraser history behind the Outlander narrative. Good lunch options in the town. Free, open access.

5. Cawdor Castle (optional, seasonal)

Famous for its Shakespeare connection (Macbeth’s “Thane of Cawdor”), this is a genuinely beautiful Highland castle with stunning gardens. Still home to the Cawdor family. Open seasonally (May–October). Admission ~£16pp.
