Typical route

Edinburgh Outlander Day Tour Route

A well-paced day covering six key Outlander filming locations. This is our most popular Edinburgh route – flexible, with time for photos, lunch, and the Sam Heughan audio guide at Doune Castle.

1

Midhope Castle (Lallybroch)

First stop – morning

The Z-plan tower house on the Hopetoun Estate that serves as the exterior of Jamie Fraser's ancestral home, Lallybroch. Only viewable externally, but instantly recognisable and one of the most-photographed Outlander spots in Scotland. We arrive early before the crowds.

2

Blackness Castle (Fort William Prison)

Mid-morning

A dramatic 15th-century fortress shaped like a ship, jutting into the Firth of Forth. In the series it doubles as the fearsome garrison of Fort William. Historic Scotland site with incredible coastal views. Just a few minutes from Midhope – they pair naturally.

3

Linlithgow Palace (Wentworth Prison)

Late morning

One of Scotland's grandest royal ruins, birthplace of Mary Queen of Scots. In Outlander it appears as Wentworth Prison. The scale of the Great Hall and the loch-side setting make it worth a longer stop – and there's a good cafe in the town for coffee.

4

Culross (Cranesmuir)

Lunch stop

Scotland's best-preserved 17th-century village with cobbled streets, ochre-painted houses, and the Town House featured in the series. Culross Palace gardens are beautiful in summer. The Biscuit Cafe or Red Lion are good for lunch. Fans and non-fans alike find it atmospheric.

5

Doune Castle (Castle Leoch)

Afternoon

The most recognisable Outlander filming location. The Great Hall and courtyard are immediately familiar. Pick up the audio guide narrated by Sam Heughan – it's entertaining even for non-Outlander visitors. The castle also featured in Monty Python and the Holy Grail and Game of Thrones.

6

Falkland (1940s Inverness)

Late afternoon

This pretty Fife village stands in for 1940s and 1960s Inverness – the opening scenes where Claire first arrives in Scotland. The Bruce Fountain in the village square is instantly recognisable. Falkland Palace is a beautiful Renaissance building worth a visit if time allows.

Optional Extras & Extensions

Craigmillar Castle

Ardsmuir Prison in the series. A well-preserved medieval castle on Edinburgh's south side with sweeping city views.

Edinburgh Royal Mile & Bakehouse Close

The atmospheric close where Jamie and Claire reunite in Season 3. Walkable from the city centre – ideal as a pre-tour or post-tour stop.

Drummond Castle Gardens

The stunning formal gardens that double as the Palace of Versailles in the series. Open seasonally – check availability.

Bo'ness & Kinneil Railway

The heritage railway station used for train scenes in the series. Seasonal opening – a charming addition if schedule allows.
