Doune Castle

Stirlingshire · Late 14th century · Medieval courtyard castle

Doune Castle is one of the best-preserved medieval castles in Scotland, built as a powerful courtyard castle with an imposing gatehouse-tower. Its remarkably intact state has made it a favourite with film and television productions – it is the castle in Monty Python and the Holy Grail, served as Winterfell in the pilot of Game of Thrones, and appears as Castle Leoch in Outlander.

History

Robert Stewart, Duke of Albany and Regent of Scotland, built Doune Castle in the late 14th century. The castle was designed as a display of power, with a massive gatehouse-tower that combined great hall, private chambers and defences in a single structure. It later served as a royal hunting lodge and a dower house for Scottish queens. The castle is now managed by Historic Environment Scotland.
