Scottish Castle Guide

Stirling Castle

Central Scotland · 12th–16th century · Royal castle and palace

Stirling Castle is one of the most important castles in Scottish history, sitting atop a dramatic volcanic crag that dominates the landscape for miles. Its strategic position – controlling the lowest crossing point of the River Forth – made it the key to Scotland. The castle was a favoured royal residence of the Stewart monarchs and contains some of the finest Renaissance architecture in Britain, including the Royal Palace and the Great Hall.

History

Stirling Castle has been besieged at least 16 times, more than any other castle in Scotland. William Wallace's victory at the Battle of Stirling Bridge in 1297 and Robert the Bruce's triumph at Bannockburn in 1314 both centred on control of Stirling. Mary Queen of Scots was crowned here in 1543, and James VI spent his childhood within its walls. The castle was a working military base until the 20th century.
