Urquhart Castle stands on a rocky headland jutting into Loch Ness, offering one of the most dramatic castle views in Scotland. The ruins span the medieval period and the visitor centre – built into the hillside – tells the story of 1,000 years of warfare, clan conflict and strategic importance. It is the most visited castle in the Highlands and has been managed by Historic Environment Scotland since its acquisition in 1913.
History
The site has been fortified since at least the early medieval period, with the present stone castle dating primarily from the 13th to 16th centuries. Urquhart was held alternately by the Crown, the Comyns and the Grants, and was fought over during the Wars of Scottish Independence. In 1692, the garrison blew up part of the castle to prevent its use by Jacobite forces. The iconic Grant Tower remains the most recognisable feature.
