Wester Ross

Destination

Wester Ross

Bealach na Ba, Applecross, Torridon, Gairloch. Scotland's wild Atlantic coast.

Wester Ross is where Scotland feels properly wild. The mountains of Torridon, the hairpins of the Bealach na Ba, the beaches of Gairloch and the sub-tropical gardens of Inverewe. It is remote, dramatic and utterly beautiful. Single-track roads, sea eagles overhead and a sense of space that most of Britain has lost.

Bealach na Ba and Applecross

The Bealach na Ba (Pass of the Cattle) is one of the greatest driving roads in Britain. Hairpin bends climb to over 600 metres with views across to Skye and the Outer Hebrides from the top. The descent into Applecross is spectacular. The Applecross Inn at the bottom serves excellent seafood and is a destination in itself.

Torridon

The Torridon mountains, Liathach and Beinn Eighe, are among the most impressive in Scotland. The Beinn Eighe nature reserve has ancient Caledonian pine and well-marked trails. Upper Loch Torridon is beautiful in any weather. The Torridon Hotel is one of the best places to stay in the Highlands.

Gairloch and the beaches

Big Sand and Red Point near Gairloch are stunning beaches that rarely feel crowded. Gairloch itself has a heritage museum, boat trips for wildlife watching and a relaxed atmosphere. Gruinard Bay further north has another beautiful beach.

Inverewe Garden

Inverewe is a remarkable garden on the shore of Loch Ewe, growing sub-tropical plants thanks to the warming effect of the Gulf Stream. Himalayan rhododendrons, Tasmanian eucalyptus and South African plants all thrive here, 57 degrees north.

Getting here

From Inverness, the A832 and A896 lead to Torridon and Gairloch. Allow double the sat-nav time on single-track roads. A Highland chauffeur handles the driving so you can enjoy the scenery. See our full Wester Ross guide and NC500 private tours.
