Scottish Highlands

Every region, from Inverness and Loch Ness to Skye, Glen Coe, the Cairngorms and the islands. Your starting point for the Highlands.

The Scottish Highlands cover a vast area with enormously varied character. The wild Atlantic west coast is completely different from the gentle Cairngorms. Skye is different from Orkney. The scale surprises people: Inverness to the north coast is three hours, to Skye two and a half, to Glen Coe one and a half. This page links to our guides for each region so you can plan the trip that suits you.

The regions

Inverness and surroundings - the Highland capital, Culloden, Loch Ness, the Black Isle. The natural starting point.

Isle of Skye - Scotland's most famous island. Trotternish ridge, Fairy Pools, outstanding food. Two to three days ideal.

Lochaber and Glen Coe - the most dramatic mountain scenery. Glen Coe, Ben Nevis, Glenfinnan Viaduct.

The Cairngorms - ancient forests, reindeer, mountain plateaus, dark skies. Aviemore as the hub.

Wester Ross - the wild west coast. Torridon, Applecross, Gairloch beaches, single-track roads.

Speyside - the whisky heartland. More distilleries than anywhere else in Scotland.

Orkney - Neolithic archaeology, Norse heritage, sea cliffs. A ferry crossing from the north coast.

Outer Hebrides - Callanish, Harris beaches, Gaelic culture, genuine remoteness.

Perthshire - the gateway from the south. Big Tree Country, waterfalls, whisky.

Royal Deeside - Balmoral, Braemar, the Dee valley. The royal connection.

Loch Lomond and Trossachs - Scotland's largest loch, easy from Glasgow and Edinburgh.

Why private touring works

The Highlands are vast and the best experiences are often off the main roads. A private chauffeur and driver-guide means you set the pace, stop where you want, enjoy whisky tastings and benefit from local knowledge that no guidebook can match. See our private tours for ideas.

Scale and distances

People underestimate how big the Highlands are. Inverness to Skye is 2.5 hours. Inverness to Glen Coe is 1.5 hours. Edinburgh to Inverness is 3 hours on the A9. Single-track roads on the west coast take twice as long as the sat-nav suggests. Plan accordingly, or better still, let us plan for you.

Frequently asked questions

What counts as the Scottish Highlands?

Everything north of the Highland Boundary Fault, which runs from Loch Lomond to Stonehaven. That includes Inverness, Loch Ness, Skye, Glen Coe, the Cairngorms, Wester Ross, Sutherland, Orkney, the Outer Hebrides, Highland Perthshire and Aberdeenshire.

What is the best time to visit the Highlands?

May to September for the longest days and warmest weather. September and October for autumn colour and fewer crowds. Winter for dramatic light and snow-covered mountains.

How many days do I need in the Highlands?

Three days gives you a taste. Five days covers two or three regions well. Seven to ten days lets you explore properly. The Highlands reward slow travel.

Should I self-drive or use a private chauffeur?

Self-driving gives independence but means navigating single-track roads, parking challenges and no whisky tastings while driving. A private chauffeur lets you relax and benefit from local knowledge.
