Frequently asked questions

Where does the weather data come from?
Forecast and observations are from the Met Office. When METOFFICE_API_KEY is configured, we show site-specific summaries for the Highlands. Warnings are from the Met Office UK warnings feed. For full forecasts and radar, use the Met Office directly.
What weather warnings are shown?
We display active Met Office weather warnings (e.g. wind, snow, ice, rain) that may affect travel. Warnings are UK-wide; filter by region on this page to focus on the Highlands, Skye, Cairngorms, or Speyside.
Why is there no forecast on this page?
Forecast data requires a Met Office DataHub API key (METOFFICE_API_KEY). Without it, we still show weather warnings. For detailed forecasts, check the Met Office website or app.
How does weather affect road and ferry travel?
Snow and ice affect the A9, Drumochter, and single-track routes; high winds can close bridges and cancel ferries. Always check roads (Traffic Scotland) and ferry operators (e.g. CalMac) alongside weather before travelling.

Plan your Highland trip with a dedicated driver or a guided tour. We run from Inverness to Skye, Speyside, the Cairngorms, and beyond.
