Orkney sits just off the north coast of Scotland, separated by the Pentland Firth, and feels like a different country. The archaeology is staggering: Skara Brae is 5,000 years old. The Ring of Brodgar and Maeshowe are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Add Norse heritage, wartime history at Scapa Flow, Highland Park whisky and some of the best beef and cheese in Britain, and you have an unforgettable multi-day destination.
Neolithic wonders
Skara Brae, a Neolithic village preserved under sand for thousands of years, is one of the most important prehistoric sites in Europe. Ring of Brodgar is a stone circle between two lochs, atmospheric at any time. Maeshowe is a chambered cairn aligned with the winter solstice, with Viking runic graffiti on the walls. Booking for Maeshowe is essential.
Kirkwall and Stromness
Kirkwall has St Magnus Cathedral, Highland Park distillery, the Orkney Museum and good pubs on Albert Street. Stromness is quieter with narrow flagstone streets and a lovely harbourfront. Both have good accommodation and restaurants.
Wartime history
The Italian Chapel on Lamb Holm, built by POWs from Nissen huts, is remarkable. Scapa Flow was a major naval base in both World Wars. The Churchill Barriers, built after a U-boat attack, now serve as causeways connecting the southern islands.
Coastal walking and wildlife
Yesnaby sea stacks on the west coast are dramatic. Marwick Head has huge seabird colonies in summer. Hoy has the Old Man of Hoy sea stack and serious walking. Westray has puffins at Castle o' Burrian.
