NC500 driving tips
Route planning, fuel, single-track etiquette and when to take your time. Practical advice from the Highlands.
The North Coast 500 is one of the world’s great road trips. It is also demanding: long single-track sections, limited fuel and accommodation, and weather that can change quickly. A few simple habits make a big difference. Plan your fuel stops. Allow more time than you think. Use passing places correctly and pull in to let faster traffic past. For more on Highland driving in general, see our driving in the Highlands tips.
We drive these roads regularly. If you would rather sit back and let someone else handle the route, our chauffeur and tour options cover the NC500 and the wider north. One vehicle, one driver-guide, no stress.
Prefer not to drive? Private chauffeur options.
Quick tips
Fill up in Inverness, Ullapool, Thurso and Wick. Do not run low between them.
Use passing places: pull in to let traffic past. Do not block the road.
Allow five to seven days. Rushing in three or four means no time to stop.
Book accommodation in advance, especially in summer.
Check weather and road conditions. Some sections are exposed.
Single-track etiquette: the vehicle nearest the passing place gives way.
FAQ
How long does the NC500 take to drive?
Five to seven days is comfortable for most people. Rushing it in three or four means long days and less time to stop. We recommend at least five days so you can enjoy the route and the scenery.
Where do I get fuel on the NC500?
Fill up in Inverness, Ullapool, Thurso, Wick, Inverness again on the east leg. Stops in between are limited. Do not assume fuel is available in every village. Top up when you see a station.
Is the NC500 all single-track?
No. Much of it is single-track with passing places. Some sections are two-lane. Single-track stretches require patience and knowing the etiquette. See our single-track driving guide for details.
Which direction should I drive the NC500?
Both work. Anti-clockwise (Inverness up the west coast first) is popular. Clockwise can feel quieter on some stretches. Choose based on your schedule and where you want to spend your first nights.
When is the best time to drive the NC500?
May, June and September often give a good balance of light, weather and fewer vehicles. July and August are busiest. Winter brings short days and possible road closures on higher ground.
Do I need to book accommodation in advance?
Yes, especially in summer. Options are limited in some areas. Book well ahead for July and August. Earlier and later in the season you have more flexibility but still book key stops.
What if I prefer not to drive the NC500 myself?
We offer private chauffeur and guided tours along the NC500 and similar routes. One vehicle, one driver-guide. You enjoy the scenery without the stress of driving. See our chauffeur services.
