The route from Aberdeen Airport to Dunnottar Castle & Stonehaven
This is the shortest transfer on the Aberdeen estates list. From the airport you head south on the A90 dual carriageway, passing Portlethen and Newtonhill before taking the Stonehaven turn-off at the A957 junction. The A90 section is fast, typically 30 to 35 minutes depending on traffic. From the Stonehaven junction it is a few minutes into the town centre or the harbour.
Dunnottar Castle sits on a rocky headland about a mile south of Stonehaven harbour. Access is via a signed minor road off the A92 coast road. The castle car park is small and fills quickly in summer, but as a private transfer we drop guests right at the path entrance. The walk down to the castle itself takes about 10 minutes on a steep, uneven path, so sturdy footwear is useful.
About Dunnottar Castle & Stonehaven
Dunnottar Castle is a ruined medieval fortress on a sea cliff that has featured in everything from Franco Zeffirelli's Hamlet to Outlander location scouting. The Scottish Crown Jewels were hidden here during Cromwell's siege in the 1650s. Stonehaven itself is a working fishing harbour with an excellent outdoor heated lido (open May to September), a strong chip shop culture, and the annual Stonehaven Fireball Ceremony on Hogmanay. Accommodation ranges from harbour-front B&Bs to converted fishermen's cottages.

Local tips from our drivers
The Dunnottar Castle car park charges a fee and has no turnaround space when full. In July and August, arrive before 10:00 or after 15:00 to avoid the worst queues. The castle path is exposed and can be slippery in rain. Stonehaven harbour has limited parking; if you are staying near the harbour, we can drop luggage at the door and meet you on foot. The Bay Fish & Chips on the seafront is consistently rated among the best in Scotland, but expect a queue at weekends.

Frequently asked questions
- Can we visit Dunnottar Castle on the way from the airport?
- Yes, it is directly on the route. We can add a 45- to 60-minute stop at the castle without any detour. The castle is open daily from April to October and on weekends in winter. Entry is around 7 pounds per adult.
- Is Stonehaven worth staying overnight, or is it just a day trip?
- Stonehaven has enough for an overnight stay, especially if you want to visit the castle, swim at the open-air lido, and eat at the harbour. It also works well as a base for the Aberdeenshire coast, with Fowlsheugh seabird colony and Dunnottar within walking distance.
- How far is Stonehaven from Royal Deeside?
- Stonehaven sits at the junction of the A90 coast road and the A957 inland route. From here you can reach Banchory on the A93 in about 30 minutes, making it possible to combine a coastal visit with a Deeside transfer.
- Is the walk to Dunnottar Castle accessible for everyone?
- The path down to the castle involves a steep descent and uneven steps, so it is not suitable for wheelchairs or those with significant mobility issues. There is a viewing point at the cliff top with full views of the castle that is accessible from the car park.
