The route from Aberdeen Airport to Darroch Learg

From Aberdeen Airport you take the A90 south to the Cleanhill roundabout, then the A93 west along the Dee valley. The road passes through Banchory (about 35 minutes from the airport) and Aboyne (about 50 minutes) before reaching Ballater at roughly the 1 hour 15 minute mark. Darroch Learg sits on the hill above the western end of Ballater, on Braemar Road, visible as you enter the town from the east.

The A93 between Banchory and Ballater is a pleasant, winding single carriageway through birch and pine woodland. You cross the Dee several times. The road is well surfaced but has limited overtaking opportunities, so journey time depends on traffic ahead. Ballater itself is a compact Royal Deeside village with a strong connection to the Royal Family; the old railway station has been restored as a visitor centre.

About Darroch Learg

Darroch Learg is a granite Victorian country house perched on the hillside above Ballater with views across the Dee valley to Craigendarroch and Lochnagar beyond. The Conservatory Restaurant holds three AA rosettes and sources heavily from Deeside, including estate game, local dairy, and foraged ingredients. The hotel has 12 individually designed rooms and a well-kept garden. It is quieter and more personal than the larger Deeside hotels, which suits guests who want to walk, fish, or simply be left alone.

Local tips from our drivers

The A93 between Torphins and Aboyne has a section of roadworks that has been running on and off since 2025; check Traffic Scotland before departure. Ballater's main street car park can fill up on Saturdays when the farmers' market runs. If you are arriving on a Saturday, we drop at the hotel door and avoid the village centre entirely. The hotel is on a hill, so the entrance is via a short drive off the main road. Signal is good in Ballater itself.

Frequently asked questions

Can we visit Balmoral from Ballater?
Balmoral Castle is about 15 minutes west of Ballater on the A93, near Crathie. The grounds are open roughly April to July. We can arrange a transfer or combine a Balmoral visit with your airport run.
Is Ballater a good base for walking?
Very much so. Craigendarroch, the wooded hill behind the village, has a circular walk of about an hour. Lochnagar, a Munro and one of the finest hill walks in the Cairngorms, starts from the Spittal of Glenmuick about 20 minutes south. The hotel can provide packed lunches for hill days.
Are there other restaurants in Ballater besides the hotel?
Ballater has several good options including the Rothesay Rooms (also fine dining), Clachan Grill, and a few cafes. It is a small village but unusually well served for food, partly because of the Balmoral connection.
What time should we leave for an early morning flight from Aberdeen?
For a flight departing at 07:00, we would recommend a pickup from Darroch Learg at 04:30 at the latest. The road is quiet at that hour and the drive takes about 1 hour 10 minutes, giving you time for security. We track flight times and adjust if needed.
