The route from Aberdeen Airport to Cawdor Estate

From Aberdeen Airport you take the A96 west, the main road linking Aberdeen to Inverness. This is predominantly single carriageway with regular overtaking sections, passing through Inverurie, Huntly, Keith, and Fochabers before reaching Elgin. From Elgin the A96 continues west to Forres, then you take the B9090 north to Cawdor. The total distance is about 110 miles.

The A96 is a steady drive rather than a dramatic one. It follows the broad agricultural strath through Aberdeenshire and Moray, passing whisky country around Keith and Dufftown. West of Elgin, the landscape opens out towards the Moray Firth. The B9090 to Cawdor is a quiet, narrow B-road through farmland and woodland for the last three miles. Cawdor Castle and the estate cottages are well signed from the B9090.

About Cawdor Estate

Cawdor Estate has been in the same family since the 14th century. The castle is the one associated with Shakespeare's Macbeth, though the historical connection is loose at best. The grounds include three distinct gardens, a nine-hole golf course, and extensive woodland walks. The estate lets a range of self-catering cottages on the grounds, from small bothies to larger lodges. Nairn, the nearest town, has two championship links golf courses and a sandy beach on the Moray Firth, with dolphin sightings common from the shore.

Local tips from our drivers

The A96 between Huntly and Keith has several short single-track sections during ongoing improvement works. Journey time can vary by 15 to 20 minutes depending on traffic flow. The road through Keith itself has a 30mph zone that catches people out with a speed camera. Cawdor Castle is seasonal, generally open May to early October, but the estate cottages operate year-round. The B9090 is unlit and has no markings, so take care arriving after dark. Nairn is a five-minute drive from the estate if you need shops or fuel.

Frequently asked questions

Can we visit a whisky distillery on the way?
The A96 route passes through the heart of Speyside. Glenfiddich, Macallan, and Aberlour are all within a short detour from Keith or Craigellachie. We can build in a distillery stop of 60 to 90 minutes without significantly extending the journey.
Is Cawdor Castle open to visitors?
The castle is typically open from May to early October. If you are staying in the estate cottages outside those months, the castle will be closed, but the gardens and grounds are accessible. Check with the estate office for current opening dates.
How far is Cawdor from Inverness?
Cawdor is about 20 minutes from Inverness by road. If you are considering flying into Inverness instead, the transfer would be much shorter. We offer Inverness Airport transfers to Cawdor as well.
Is Cawdor a good base for exploring the Highlands?
Cawdor sits between the Moray Firth coast and the Cairngorms, with Inverness 20 minutes away and Loch Ness about 40 minutes. It works well as a base if you want coast, mountains, and culture within easy reach, without staying in a city.
