Inveraray Castle in Inveraray, Argyll

Scottish Castle Guide

Inveraray Castle

Argyll · 1745–1789 · Gothic Revival castle

Inveraray Castle is the seat of the Dukes of Argyll, hereditary Chiefs of Clan Campbell, and one of the grandest stately homes in the west of Scotland. The Gothic Revival castle was designed by Roger Morris and William Adam and sits on the shores of Loch Fyne, surrounded by parkland and ancient woodland. The Armoury Hall contains one of the finest collections of arms in Europe, arranged in spectacular circular displays.

History

The Campbells have been based at Inveraray since the 15th century. The present castle was built from 1745 to replace the earlier fortified tower house, and its Gothic Revival style was ahead of its time – making it one of the earliest examples of the style in Britain. The castle was featured in Downton Abbey as the fictional Duneagle Castle.
