Eilean Donan is Scotland's most iconic and most photographed castle, standing on a small tidal island where three great sea lochs – Loch Duich, Loch Long and Loch Alsh – meet. The castle is connected to the mainland by a stone footbridge and is framed by dramatic Highland mountains. It has appeared in films including Highlander, The World Is Not Enough and Elizabeth: The Golden Age.
History
A castle has stood on Eilean Donan since the early 13th century, built as a defence against Viking raids. The Mackenzie and Macrae clans held it for centuries. In 1719, during a Jacobite uprising supported by Spain, three Royal Navy frigates bombarded the castle into ruins. It lay derelict for 200 years until Lieutenant Colonel John Macrae-Gilstrap began a painstaking 20-year restoration in 1919, completed in 1932.
