Scottish Castle Guide

Dunvegan Castle

Isle of Skye · 13th century onwards · Clan seat, oldest continuously inhabited castle in Scotland

Dunvegan Castle is the ancestral seat of the Chiefs of Clan MacLeod and has been continuously occupied by the same family for almost 800 years – making it the oldest continuously inhabited castle in Scotland. The castle sits on a rocky outcrop on the shores of Loch Dunvegan, and the gardens – including a walled garden and water garden – are beautiful at any time of year. Seal boat trips depart from the castle jetty.

History

The MacLeods have held Dunvegan since the 13th century. The castle houses treasured clan heirlooms including the Fairy Flag – an ancient silk banner said to have magical powers to protect the clan in battle. Legend dates it to a fairy gift; modern analysis suggests it may be a Norse banner from the 7th century. Bonnie Prince Charlie's waistcoat and a lock of his hair are also displayed.
