Cawdor Castle

Cawdor Castle is one of the most atmospheric castles in Scotland – a genuine medieval tower house that has been continuously inhabited for over 600 years. The castle is forever associated with Shakespeare's Macbeth, though the historical Macbeth died a century before the castle was built. The beautiful gardens – three distinct gardens plus Big Wood, an ancient woodland – are as much a draw as the castle itself.

History

The central tower was built in the late 14th century by the Thanes of Cawdor, and legend has it that the first Thane was told in a dream to load a donkey with gold, follow it, and build his castle where it stopped – beneath a hawthorn tree. The tree still stands, dead but preserved, in the vaulted basement. The Cawdor family (Campbells of Cawdor) have held it since the 15th century.
