The route from Inverness Airport to Strachur & Loch Fyne

This is one of the longer transfers from Inverness, but it covers some of Scotland's finest driving roads. We leave the airport and head south-west on the A82, following the full length of Loch Ness through Drumnadrochit and Fort Augustus. From Fort Augustus we continue south on the A82 along the Caledonian Canal to Invergarry, then take the A82 through Glen Coe's approaches and past Loch Lochy.

At Tarbet on Loch Lomond (not to be confused with Tarbert on Loch Fyne) we pick up the A83 west through Arrochar, over the Rest and Be Thankful pass, and down through Glen Croe into Argyll. The final section follows the A815 north along the eastern shore of Loch Fyne to Strachur. Allow a good three hours for this journey with a comfort stop, though we can also route via the A9 and M80 through Stirling for a faster motorway-based alternative.

About Strachur & Loch Fyne

Strachur is a small village on the eastern shore of Loch Fyne, one of Scotland's longest sea lochs. The Creggans Inn sits right on the waterfront with views across to Inveraray. Loch Fyne is famous for its oysters and seafood, and the Loch Fyne Oyster Bar at Cairndow is a 15-minute drive north. The surrounding Argyll Forest Park offers walking, cycling, and some of the quietest countryside on the west coast.

Local tips from our drivers

The Rest and Be Thankful (A83) can close in winter due to landslip risk. When it does, the diversion via the Old Military Road adds roughly 20 minutes but is well signed. If your guests are flexible on timing, the journey works best leaving Inverness before 9am to avoid any build-up through Fort Augustus. The alternative route via the A9 south and M80 is faster in poor weather but misses the Highland scenery entirely. We will advise on the best option on the day.

Frequently asked questions

Can we stop in Glen Coe on the way?
The standard route via the A82 passes close to Glen Coe. We can include a 20-minute stop at the Three Sisters viewpoint or the Glen Coe visitor centre without significantly extending the journey.
Is there a quicker route than the A82?
Yes. The A9 south to Stirling, then M80 and A83 west is often faster in terms of clock time, but it is mostly motorway driving. We are happy to take either route based on your preference.
How long does the transfer actually take?
The scenic A82 route typically takes around 3 hours including a short stop. The motorway route via Stirling can be closer to 2 hours 45 minutes in good traffic.
Can you recommend somewhere to eat on the way?
The Loch Fyne Oyster Bar at Cairndow is a natural stop, about 15 minutes before Strachur. Lock 16 Boathouse at Crinan is also worth a detour if time allows.
