After Spean Bridge the road opens up as it approaches Fort William, with Ben Nevis visible ahead in clear weather.

The full journey takes about two hours and covers some of the most dramatic road scenery in Scotland, following the geological fault line of the Great Glen from end to end.

The A82 through the Great Glen is single carriageway throughout and can be slow behind campervans and timber lorries in summer. We know the overtaking points well and will keep the journey comfortable. Fort Augustus is a good halfway comfort stop, about one hour in, with public facilities and the Caledonian Canal locks to watch. If visibility is good, the first proper view of Ben Nevis comes at Spean Bridge, about 20 minutes before arrival. The Commando Memorial at Spean Bridge is a worthwhile two-minute stop for the view alone.

- Can we stop in Glen Coe on the way?
- Glen Coe is south of Fort William, so it is not on the direct route from Inverness. However, we can easily include a Glen Coe loop on the return journey or as a separate day trip from the hotel.
- Is the A82 safe to drive in winter?
- The A82 is a major trunk road and is gritted and maintained year-round. Winter conditions can slow the journey by 20 to 30 minutes, particularly around Loch Lochy. We drive this road regularly in all seasons.
- How far is the hotel from Fort William town?
- About two miles north of the town centre, roughly a five-minute drive. The hotel feels completely removed from the town despite the short distance.
- Can you arrange transfers to the Jacobite Steam Train?
- Yes. The Jacobite departs from Fort William station. We can drop guests at the station in the morning and collect from the Mallaig end, or arrange a return pickup at Fort William.
