The route from Inverness Airport to The Fife Arms

From Inverness Airport we take the A9 south across the Kessock Bridge and through the Black Isle, then continue on the A9 past Aviemore and through the Cairngorms National Park. At Kingussie or Dalwhinnie we turn east, picking up the A86 and then the A93 through Glen Shee or, depending on conditions, continuing on the A9 to Perth and coming back north via Blairgowrie on the A93. The Glen Shee route crosses the Cairnwell Pass, the highest public road in Britain, before descending into Braemar.

The Fife Arms sits in the centre of Braemar village, right on the main street. The full journey from Inverness takes about 2 hours 15 minutes via the A9 and A93. The final stretch through Glen Shee is spectacular mountain driving, but in winter the Cairnwell Pass can be affected by snow and we will take the lower alternative route if needed.

About The Fife Arms

The Fife Arms is a Victorian coaching inn that has been transformed into a world-class art hotel by gallery owners Iwan and Manuela Wirth. Every room contains original artworks, and the public spaces include pieces by Picasso, Freud, and a host of contemporary Scottish artists. The hotel has a fine dining restaurant, a traditional Highland pub, and sits in the heart of Braemar, surrounded by the Cairngorms. Balmoral Castle is 15 minutes east, and the Braemar Highland Games take place each September.

Local tips from our drivers

The A93 over the Cairnwell Pass (Glen Shee ski road) is the most direct route from the A9 but it reaches 670 metres altitude and can close in heavy snow. Between November and March we check conditions before departure and will reroute via the A90 and Deeside road if necessary. Braemar can be very cold in winter, regularly recording the lowest temperatures in Britain. In summer, the village is busy during the Highland Games in early September, so book accommodation and transfers well in advance for that period.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Glen Shee road passable in winter?
Usually, yes. It is a maintained A-road and is gritted, but heavy snowfall can close the Cairnwell Pass temporarily. We monitor conditions and have an alternative route via the A90 and Deeside if needed.
Can we stop at a distillery on the way?
Dalwhinnie distillery is on the A9 section of the route and makes a natural 45-minute stop. It is one of the highest distilleries in Scotland and gives a good introduction to Highland single malt.
How far is Balmoral Castle from Braemar?
About 15 minutes east on the A93. The castle grounds and exhibition are open to visitors from April to July. We can arrange a separate transfer or include it in a day trip.
Can you also transfer me from Aberdeen Airport?
Yes. We also offer transfers from Aberdeen Airport to The Fife Arms, which is about 1 hour 30 minutes via the A93 through Royal Deeside. This is a shorter journey and avoids the mountain pass entirely.
