From Inverness Airport we head south on the A9 briefly before taking the B851, the old military road that runs along the south-eastern side of Loch Ness through Strathnairn. This is a quiet, well-surfaced single carriageway that passes through open moorland and scattered farming settlements. The route avoids the busier A82 entirely and gives a genuine sense of entering the Highlands within minutes of leaving the airport.
Farr is accessed off the B851, with the final section following a minor road to the estate. The journey is about 45 minutes, and the last 10 minutes are on quiet single-track roads through open country. This route rarely carries any traffic and feels properly remote despite the short distance from Inverness.

Mobile signal is patchy across Strathnairn, and the final approach to the estate may have no signal at all. We always confirm access arrangements before leaving the airport. The B851 is a good driving road but has no fuel stations or shops along its length, so guests wanting supplies should pick them up in Inverness before heading out. In winter, the minor road to the estate can be icy and is not a gritting priority. We are well equipped for these conditions. The Grouse and Trout pub at Flichity, on the B851, is one of the few eating options in the area and is reliably good.

- Supermarket delivery coverage is limited in this area. We recommend picking up essentials in Inverness before departure, and we are happy to stop at a supermarket on the way from the airport.
- Is there phone signal at Farr Estate?
- Signal is very limited. Some lodges have Wi-Fi, but mobile coverage is unreliable. The estate office can advise on the latest connectivity at your specific lodge.
- What outdoor activities are available?
- Fishing and stalking are available through the estate in season. Walking routes range from gentle riverside paths to full hill days on the surrounding moorland. The estate team can brief you on what is available during your visit.
