Blackness Castle juts into the Firth of Forth like a great stone ship, earning it the nickname 'the ship that never sailed.' The 15th-century fortress served as a royal castle, garrison fortress, prison and ammunition depot throughout its history. Modern visitors know it best as a filming location for the Outlander television series, where it stands in as the brutal Fort William. The castle is a short drive from Linlithgow Palace, the birthplace of Mary Queen of Scots.
History
Built by Sir George Crichton in the 1440s, Blackness Castle was forfeited to the Crown in 1453 and became one of four castles that the Articles of Union in 1707 required to be maintained and garrisoned. It served as a state prison – inmates included Cardinal Beaton and Covenanters – and was later used as a powder magazine. Historic Environment Scotland now manages the castle.
