Best time to visit the Highlands
When to go: light, weather and what to expect. Practical advice from the heart of the Highlands.
The Highlands reward visitors in every season. Most people come for the long days and milder weather of May to September. Within that window, June and September often offer the best balance: enough light and warmth without the peak crowds and midge pressure of high summer.
Autumn brings colour and quiet. Winter is for those who like short days and dramatic light and are prepared for changeable conditions. From November to around March or April, some attractions and historical sites have restricted opening times or close – worth checking before you go. We run chauffeur and tours year-round and can tailor your trip to the time of year you choose.

FAQ
When is the best time for the Highlands?
Late May to September gives the longest days and mildest weather. June and September often feel the most comfortable: good light, fewer crowds than July and August, and midges can be less intense than peak summer.
Are the Highlands busy in summer?
Yes. Key routes like the A82, A9 and NC500 are busier July and August. Book accommodation and popular stops in advance. May, June and September are quieter and still very rewarding.
When do midges appear in the Highlands?
Usually late May through September, worst in still, damp conditions. Lochsides and early evening are typical trouble spots. Wind and sun help. See our midges guide for more.
Can I drive the Highlands in winter?
Yes, but conditions vary. Snow and ice can affect higher routes including the A9. Check Traffic Scotland and weather before setting out. Allow extra time and consider a chauffeur if you prefer not to drive in winter conditions.
When is best for Skye and the west?
Spring and autumn often suit: fewer visitors, good light. Summer is fine but book ferries and accommodation well ahead. Weather on the west coast is changeable at any time of year.
When do the roads get quiet again?
October sees a clear drop in traffic. November to March is quietest. Days are short and weather mixed, but the landscape is dramatic and you will have much of it to yourself.
Are attractions and historic sites open in winter?
From November to around March or April, some attractions and historical sites in the Highlands have restricted opening times or close. Check ahead so you can plan around them.
