A new chapter for the Highland capital
The Inverness Castle Experience opened on 9 February 2026, completing a £47 million, four-year transformation of one of Scotland's most prominent landmarks. The castle, perched on its hill above the River Ness, had served as a courthouse and administrative building for over a century. Now it tells the story of the Highlands through immersive exhibits, sensory installations, and panoramic views from the castle roof terrace.
The experience covers thousands of years of Highland history — from the Picts and the Norse, through the clan era and the Jacobite risings, to the Clearances, the world wars, and the modern Highlands. The approach is sensory and storytelling-led rather than traditional museum displays. Visitors walk through themed rooms where light, sound, and projection bring the past to life. A dedicated section explores the natural environment of the Highlands — its geology, wildlife, and landscape.
The roof terrace offers one of the finest views in the north of Scotland: the River Ness flowing below, the Moray Firth in the distance, and the hills of the Black Isle and Ben Wyvis on the horizon. On a clear day, you can see the mountains of Easter Ross.
The castle's transformation has been a landmark project for Inverness and the Highlands. It gives the Highland capital a world-class visitor attraction to complement the city's existing draws — the Victorian Market, the riverside walks, Leakey's Bookshop, and the excellent restaurants along the river. For visitors on a Highland tour, it is now an essential first stop in Inverness.
