The Glenfinnan Viaduct is one of Scotland's most recognisable landmarks. Made famous by the Harry Potter films, this sweeping 21-arch railway bridge sits above Loch Shiel in a setting that feels almost impossibly dramatic. A private tour from Inverness lets you enjoy the full journey — Great Glen, Fort William, and Glenfinnan — at your own pace.

We head south from Inverness through the Great Glen, past Loch Ness and Fort Augustus, before reaching Fort William and continuing to Glenfinnan. The drive is around one and a half hours each way, with stops built in. Every tour includes a dedicated driver-guide and our full chauffeur service from Inverness.

The route from Inverness

The route follows the Great Glen south — one of Scotland's finest natural corridors. You pass Loch Ness, Loch Oich and the Caledonian Canal before reaching Fort William, the outdoor capital of the Highlands. From there it is a short drive west to Glenfinnan, with Loch Shiel opening out ahead of you.

We stop where the scenery warrants it — Fort Augustus locks, quiet loch-side pull-ins, and viewpoints above the glen. The journey is as much a part of the day as the destination.

The Glenfinnan Viaduct

Built in 1901, the viaduct carries the West Highland Line across the River Finnan. Its 21 concrete arches curve gracefully above the valley, and it gained worldwide fame as the route of the Hogwarts Express in the Harry Potter films. A short walk from the car park leads to the popular viewpoint above the viaduct.

During summer months the Jacobite steam train runs across the viaduct, and we can time your visit to watch it cross if schedules allow. It is a spectacular sight — the steam rising against the mountains behind.

Glenfinnan Monument and Loch Shiel

At the head of Loch Shiel stands the Glenfinnan Monument, erected in 1815 to mark the spot where Bonnie Prince Charlie raised his standard in 1745, beginning the Jacobite rising. The National Trust visitor centre tells the story of the campaign and the clans who rallied here.

The view down Loch Shiel from the monument is one of the most photographed in the Highlands — a long, narrow loch flanked by steep mountains, unchanged for centuries.

Combine with Fort William or Ben Nevis

Glenfinnan is only a short drive from Fort William, so a combined day is straightforward. For guests already in the area, our Fort William chauffeur service covers local touring and transfers. You might add a stop at the Ben Nevis visitor centre, Neptune's Staircase on the Caledonian Canal, or the West Highland Museum. For a longer loop, our Glen Coe tour from Inverness continues south into Glen Coe and Glen Etive.

We tailor the route to suit your time and interests. View our private tours from Inverness for more options, or get in touch to plan your day.
