Dunrobin Castle is the most northerly of Scotland's great houses and one of the most visually striking. With 189 rooms, it is also one of the largest houses in the northern Highlands. The château-style architecture, designed by Sir Charles Barry (architect of the Palace of Westminster), and the spectacular formal gardens – modelled on Versailles – make Dunrobin feel more like the Loire Valley than the Scottish Highlands.
History
The castle has been home to the Earls and Dukes of Sutherland since the 13th century, with the oldest parts dating to around 1275. The dramatic transformation into a French château came in 1845–1850 under Sir Charles Barry. During the First World War it served as a naval hospital, and during the Second World War as a boarding school. The castle remains the seat of the Sutherland family.
