Dunnottar Castle occupies one of the most dramatic natural positions of any castle in Britain – a flat-topped rocky headland rising 160 feet above the North Sea, connected to the mainland by a narrow strip of land. The ruins sprawl across the cliff-top and include a tower house, chapel, stables and barracks. The castle played a crucial role in Scottish history as the hiding place of the Honours of Scotland (the Scottish Crown Jewels) during Cromwell's invasion.
History
The site has been fortified since at least the early medieval period. The present stone castle was largely built by the Keith family, Earls Marischal, from the 14th century onwards. In 1651-52, a small garrison held Dunnottar against Cromwell's army for eight months while the Crown Jewels were smuggled out and hidden. The castle was later abandoned after the Jacobite risings and fell into ruin.
